A lot of the time, I feel like this pumpkin.

Or this?

Warhol Pug

Sorry I've been gone! I'm going to have to start my whole drawing-a-day count over now. Sigh. People keep telling me I ought to make shirts or buttons or something so here is a shirt idea I'm working on!

Ah Crap

Very sloppy picture, but the explanation is there as to why it's sloppy. I have so much to do. Crap crap crap!

Sloppy Seconds

grownupsclub-AC

Hey man. Don't look at me. If you vow to do a drawing each day, you're gonna wind up with some sloppy ones. See above.

Oh, you know, just day dreaming.

Word Vomit

Don't you just sometimes vomit words out and wish you could pick them up and stuff them back in your mouth?

Cats Everywhere!

cats-everywhere

Hello. This is "Cats Everywhere." I am tired. BLARGH.

So, I'm kind of delirious at the moment. Long day coming in early to work, then it's sort of crunch-time on this presentation I'm working on, staying late, then going to the first day of my rewrite class. I feel like everyone there resents my being born in the 80's. Not individually of course -- everyone was nice -- but man, the room vibe wants me to dust some of this hopeful gleam off of my eyes, I think. Nonetheless, great class! Just a combination of everything in this day. ANYHOO--

Daily drawing! Weird angular cats I was doodling in class and tried to recreate here. I don't usually sign my name but I feel like it added to the whole style. Teehee. Facetious signatures.

Oh my God I need to sleep now. Happy Rosh Hashana.

Also the blue thing is a cactus.

Monster Hospital Scans

monsterhospital-headaches
More Monster Hospital scans! Low quality, but there's still a hint at what's to come.

Screen Fairy

grownupsclub-screen-fairy

Just a little reminder to myself that I should, by no means, start working again. I work at a computer all day, and when I get into a zone, it's hard to stop. Hallucinating usually helps, though.

Octopi in the sky

octopiinthesky
Drawing a day, whoo! Didn't have time to think or do a Grown Ups Club or anything today. In fact, just BARELY remembered that I was going to do this whole drawing a day thing in time. Phew, wouldn't want to start over again. Anyways, I was Googling images of Octopi the other day (yep, no back story) and I noticed a certain type of octopus that looked like a helicopter. So, not wanting to put new thought into anything today, here's a sky octopus. Also, partially inspired to do something of the like because I started work with a literary agent this week who represents a lot of the Dahl properties. Staring at a picture of James and the Giant Peach all day can really put you in a bright mood!

Fridge

grownupsclub-fridge
Ugh, not too happy with this one, but hey, drawing a day, right? Was cleaning the other day and decided that, before unloading all the lovely groceries I had just spent the last of my money on, I should clean the fridge. I guess it's not often that I have that thought, because this is what happened. Also, I kind of imagined the fridge monster as being The Nightmare from Little Nemo (Adventures in Slumberland) but that was just plain too hard to draw. So is the side of a fridge, for some reason. I guess it doesn't come up much.

Ugh, so tired.

Flea Problem

grownupsclub-fleas
So this is why daily uploads didn't really start yesterday. Ugh. After getting these miserable little bites all over my ankles and legs, I've finally had to admit that we have a flea problem. The evil kitty probably left them. Spent two days cleaning and still getting bites, and today we're doing the bombs. The worst part is, fleas love me. I get bit more than anyone else in the house, no matter who I'm living with. It all started when Delilah first got fleas in my Goleta place... since then, no matter how much I clean, how much I treat, how much I do anything, or even if they disappear for years at a time, it seems they are always doomed to pop up at some point in my life, and I have these terrible flashbacks. UGH UGH UGH.

Screw the common cold, we need a better cure for these guys.

Jogging

grownupsclub-jogging
Jogging may start "tomorrow," but daily uploads start today!

KittenSupreme

Supreme-Kitten-Digital
A chassis for @ASupremeDalek's kitten. Maybe I should've titled it ASupremeKitten... KittenSupreme sounds a little like a McDonald's special.

Also! I think I'll start my drawing-a-day goal soon, either today or tomorrow. If I write it here, maybe it will actually happen.

Doctor Who Cats 11 and 5!

Aaaaand done! Finished digitizing all the Doctor Who cats, though very loosely. As I mentioned, I totally don't have the patience for coloring. Or... doing things nicely. But on the plus side, I can just stick with my "sketchbook style" and act like it's all an active choice.

Above, Matt Smith's cat! Below, Peter Davison's!

Why do cats and Doctor Who dominate my life? Are they the only two things my brain cares about? Not that I'm complaining. I mean, with cats and Doctor Who, my soul is pretty full.

...I need a dog.

Fall Line-Up

In the first seventeen minutes of "Unforgettable." UGH.

Doctor Who Cat - 10th Doctor

Doctor Who Cat - 4th Doctor

So, this is happening. Sloppy coloring, but hey, I don't have an attention span. Also, BBC America's been replaying David Tennant's doctor all day. I thought I was over the mourning period, but after re-watching Planet of the Ood, I'm not so sure.

Doctor Who Cats - Sneak Peak

All right, after those Star Wars cats, what could be better? Doctor Who Cats. Of COURSE. I did a set of four -- 4th, 5th, 10th, and 11th Doctors. Here's a sneak peak at Cat-Doctor #5 (Peter Davison's Doctor). Just a gross scan, it looks better in real life with the watercolors, but I'll clean up all of them and do digital versions to put up soon!

Star Wars Cats

So I made this as a gift Matt's Star Wars themed birthday party. Brittany spied my Star Wars cats doodles previously and thought he might like them. Watch out though. Star Wars Cats compliments have gone to my head and have now opened a Pandora's box... I've been drawing Doctor Who cats all day. I'll scan 'em when the paint dries.

Monster Hospital Concept Art

So, very excitingly, the awesome trio that is Catstein Pictures are working on producing my animated web series MONSTER HOSPITAL. It will be a series of 3 micro-shorts to be premiered online on October 31st (Halloween!). Whoo!

I am credited as creator and writer/producer. I also did character design, which will be reinterpreted by our very awesome head animator Dax Schaffer and the whole series is directed by the talented Omar Najam. :)

Concept art below, which Dax was kind enough to scan. I'll scan better copies soon, touch them up, and put them on my site as soon as it's online.

Goals

Okay, so this isn't a sketch (though I should definitely start sketching more for the sake of this poor blog), but I realized that it's been almost a year since I moved to L.A., and I've been feeling a little bummed out. I didn't expect to be rolling in millions, but the unemployment is starting to get to me. So, I decided to make a list of my accomplishments this year to make myself feel better, and goals for next year. It's better if you publicly document it, according to some studies somewhere on some internets.

1. COMPLETED UCLA PROFESSIONAL SCREENWRITING PROGRAM. And in the process made some new friends and came out with some great notes. The biggest acquired skill: the technical art of fun, exciting screen direction. Also, just the sheer experience of finishing things and not having a drawer full of first acts.

2. WROTE 2 FEATURES. Well, one of them is in good condition, one isn't and needs a major rewrite. However, I moved here in October, so I figure I've got until October to shape that one up. If I don't, consider this goal not complete.

3. CREATED A WEB SERIES. Again, if you count the fact that I moved in October, this counts as an accomplishment. My animated series of 3 micro-shorts, MONSTER HOSPITAL, is in production and will be released on October 31st. Happy Halloween! Hopefully it will soon be followed by more, resulting in 5 micro-shorts total, or possibly a real web-series of shorts 2-3 minutes long.

4. INTERNED AT 2 L.A. PRODUCTION COMPANIES. A good accomplishment but as far as how many internships you can cram into a year I think I dropped the ball on this one. Still, a lot of important experiences learning how the business works and what producers are looking for. Good skills acquired for further internships and maybe now I can start applying for assistant jobs. If only they would reply to my e-mails.

5. WROTE 1 SPEC AND 1 PILOT. A How I Met Your Mother spec to apply to fellowships, and an animated comedy spec (Animal Band) for a writing sample, my first writing project together with Omar. We had a good time together, though I am starting to suspect I am quite stubborn. Or maybe he just brings it out in me.

I also moved to a new city and got situated, made new L.A. friends and connections, found some cool hang-outs, and got a LACMA membership. I moved in with Omar and got a job as a freelance reader for some extra cash flow (well, more like cash trickle). I also am having a blast taking classes at Upright Citizens Brigade, and recently completed my 201 class. So, all in all, not bad, but a year is a long time and a lot can happen, especially now that I'm done with class. So let's try for even more next year:

2012 GOALS

1. GET A SHORT FILM PRODUCED. Hopefully, there will be more episodes of Monster Hospital. But if not, I would like to have another of my short films produced, hopefully by some of my very talented friends.

2. COMPLETE UCB TRAINING / DO MORE IMPROV. I'm halfway through my UCB training, and it's safe to say that graduating from UCB is an easy goal to meet for 2012, even if the gaps between when I sign up between levels are fairly long. However, I'd also like to get on an improv team, either by auditioning for one of the Harold teams once I've graduated from 401, joining another team, or starting my own.

3. GET AN AGENT / MANAGER / FELLOWSHIP. Any of these things would be a game-changer, particularly a fellowship. If Nickelodeon or Disney swept into my life, I'd be forever grateful. But since fellowships are extremely competitive, I'd also be happy with an agent or manager. All of these things are just stepping up your game, taking it to the next level, and all that good stuff. If something like this were to happen, realistically it'd be towards the end of the year, but I still really want to set the goal.

4. WRITE ANOTHER FEATURE AND A PILOT. At LEAST, if not more. I need another feature as a sample, one that's not an animated kids movie or a children's comedy, since both of my scripts are in this genre. If I can't, I can't, and if I end up writing another family comedy, hey, that's what happens. But I just need another one. I also need a good original pilot, not that Animal Band's not good, but something a little more accessible.

5. GET A GOOD JOB. I need a job. A good one, with, you know, money. Either an entertainment job or a job that allows me to be creative and I'm happy in, while also giving me time to write. Basically, a "grown-up" job of some sort. Now that I've finished the UCLA program, the distraction of the impending doom of having no money is too high, but I also want to be in a position that I'm really happy in and doesn't make me miserable. If I got a non-entertainment related job, I'd also want to make a commitment of a year, but then I should probably start looking for work again so I don't get stuck in "the golden handcuffs."

I'd also really like to get paid for something (anything) writing related, possibly get published somewhere (anywhere), and put together a sketch portfolio. For some unrelated to film goals, I want to do 365 days of sketches and put them on this blog, and I want to finish writing my grandfather's play, the NYMPH OF THE RIVER CALUMPIT, and maybe clean up his draft of THE DIVINE WIND.

Phew! I'd better get started!

My-Ghost-Girlfriend
This is an idea for a poster design. Over the last three days I wrote a little short film called My Ghost Girlfriend, a queer supernatural romcom. Naturally, instead of editing or actually working, I skipped straight to thinking about marketing. Excellent procrastination.

Making out: Cho and Ginny.
Fact: I had a little too much fun drawing the lesbian make-out in the first attempt and had to start over.
Type of beer pong being played: Snitch pong.

Just doing a little doodle to commemorate the series that has dominated so much of our collective childhoods. Inspired by this AWESOME MUSIC VIDEO made by my awesome friends.

diet
This is how I think every "Cathy" comic should end. Also, I SWEAR it's how I ended up eating that giant Crumbs cupcake after lunch yesterday. How else? I also drew a bunch of Angler Fish for Different Occasions while at my internship yesterday, probably post later.

This one's really sketchy, still getting used to the tablet after so long of not using it, and since this "comic" was longer I got pretty lazy with it. Oh well, I'll have to figure out how I want panels to look if I do them, but I think I'll pretty much switch to tablet a majority of the time. Whoo. Digital.

showering
More tablet practice. I doodled this beautifully (I swear) at my old internship because I was sore about how my supervisor was always perfectly put together no matter what. She would walk around like some gorgeous model in heels even if she was wearing jeans. Meanwhile, if I make an attempt to look nice I never put enough time aside and come out looking more disheveled than ever. Damn my secret curls, I'm like an Asian Shirley Temple.
apartment-hunting
I wish this was my life. It would make apartment searching a lot more exciting.

Was watching Doctor Who reruns on BBC America today, and it was the last episode with Sarah Jane Smith, who recently passed away. Aside from the other wonderful things in that episode (K-9, Anthony Stewart Head), the Doctor finally said goodbye. A perfect farewell for perhaps the most famous and beloved companion.

And, for those who don't understand the heaviness of all that Who gibberish:

I gotta get used to writing with the Bamboo tablet again. Pulled its install disks out of a dusty drawer and finally reinstalled them on my laptop. Boy, it's sloppy now, but hopefully good in the long run.

grown-ups club slow day
Production companies during the sumer are SO slow. Everyone's gone. Execs, assistants, even interns. Everyone has a summer break except Mia. So, doing nothing all last week lead to the above comic, and this:

star wars cats

Yep.
